The VC Perspective: Incremental Innovation Versus Real Game-Changers
Funding and partnerships are generally given to those with a successful track record, which the real game changers often do not have. This creates a chicken and egg problem: too much investment and partnership opportunities for traditional business models, and not enough for the real game changers. How do investors and institutions address this problem? How can we recognize and promote real innovation? How can we tell the difference between incremental innovation (products and services that merely accelerate existing innovation) and the game changers (products that enable real paradigm shifts)? Is one more attractive than the other? How do they evaluate the viability and the risks of investment in unproven technologies with great potential?
